Why Am I Always Tired? Could It Be Sleep Apnea?

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a severe medical condition that's only now starting to be recognized as a potential time bomb on our roads. Unfortunately, It is sometimes seen as just a trend inappropriately focused on what was once considered just a common quirk... loud snoring. We now know that snoring could be an indicator of more grave health issues. Conservative estimations by the World Health Organization are that as many as one-hundred million individuals may be struggling with one or more types of sleep apnea. This can be associated with very special problems for workers within performance-related jobs and especially in the commercial trucking industry, air carriers and pilots, air-traffic control and other transport related industries along with other high-stress occupations.

A Hidden Killer?

What goes on during a sleep apnea occurrence is that soft tissues droop, or fall, blocking the airway, making it difficult, or impossible to inhale. Air sliding past the obstruction is what leads to the rumbling sound associated with snoring. The brain senses the actual drop of oxygen within the blood and 'wakes' a person up with a 'urgent situation' signal in order to breath. Most people go immediately back to sleep, unaware that they have woken up at all. For an average sleep apnea sufferer, this could happen 100 times a night, or more.

For me personally, my test readings showed that I had an average rate of apnea 'events' of 95 an hour. This rate was so hard to believe that I had to be shown the test sheets several times before I could accept it. What it meant is that I virtually didn't sleep all night because my body was continually waking me up to get some air into my lungs. No wonder I was so tired all the time!

The effect of this constant waking is that it prevents you from getting into the important phases of rest that your body and mind needs to remain healthy and alert. This causes you to wake up tired and listless, as well as feeling sleepy all day. With time, this can lead to severe health issues, for example, heart as well as circulation difficulties, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. This can mean that you are at greater risk of heart attack and/or stoke. The really bad aspect of sleep apnea is that 75% or even more of people struggling with the condition are undiagnosed.

2) Only go to bed when you are tired. This may sound strange, but going bed too early will result in you lying awake. If you only go bed when you are sleepy and you get up at the usual time the next day, you will be tired earlier the following night. After a few weeks of doing this you will form a pattern that will see you going to bed at a regular time because you are tired and not because you think you need to go bed.

3) Always get up at the same time of the morning, including weekends.

4) If you love coffee (and most of us do), then you need to understand that drinking coffee can have a serious impact on our sleep. Coffee is a stimulant, so drinking coffee right before we go bed is not a good idea. What's Fatal Familial Insomnia?

There are many different sleep disorders out there and some of those come with horrible consequences. These rare diseases can cause lifelong harm with several that can even cause death. One sleep disease that always ends in death is the very rare disorder of fatal familial insomnia. This disease is a genetic mutation that has been known to occur in families. The disease always ends in death with a survival rate of no longer than 18 months after diagnosis, very few people have lived past the year mark.

Signs and Symptoms of Fatal Familial Insomnia

In general the common age in which fatal familial insomnia strikes is between 18 to 60 with the majority of people diagnosed being close to the age of fifty. The disease can also appear sometime after giving birth to children. The symptoms can vary from person to person depending on what stage they are in. In stage one the patient usually suffers from panic attacks, paranoia, phobias, and insomnia.

This first stage usually lasts about four months. The next phase increases the panic attacks and hallucinations which generally lasts for about five months. In the third phase of fatal familial insomnia the insomnia increases and rapid weight loss begins. This phase generally lasts three months. In the final progression of the disease the brain shows signs of dementia and the patient generally becomes unresponsive. Death generally occurs in six months after the onset of the dementia symptoms. The disease is usually identified after genetic testing.

Treatment of Fatal Familial Insomnia

Unfortunately there are no known treatments for fatal familial insomnia. In the first stages medication to aid in sleeping can be taken in order to see if it would help alleviate some of the symptoms. In many cases anti anxiety medications are given as well as pain relievers but most people still do not get any sleep whatsoever. In one case a man was heavily sedated with medication to put him into an induced coma only to find out that the brain did not shut down and therefore sleep was never achieved.

If it is suspected you have fatal familial insomnia your doctor will run a series of different tests to determine whether or not you are affected with the disease. The disease is extremely rare but more research is being done to make sure that there can possibly be a treatment for this deadly disorder in the future.

Why Am I So Tired All the Time?

An increasing number of us are finding that we are tired all the time. Even after a good nights sleep we still feel jaded and out of sorts. - Do you have a healthy diet? Food and quality nutrition are an important component of good health, wellbeing and are an important factor in quality sleep. Commit to having breaks for regular nutritious meals, to drink plenty of water and to minimise long periods without eating. Try to avoid regular bingeing on junk food or having sugary or caffeine laden drinks to artificially keep energy levels up. These decisions are an important part of feeding your body well, maintaining health, balance and supporting improved rest and sleep.

- Do you switch off from stress? Many people have lots of responsibility. They have to balance work, home and personal life and this can be a tough ask when all those areas are demanding 100% of their time and attention. Finding ways to introduce a little quiet time, to intermittently allow the mind to become calm and still, is essential as a way of managing stress.

Learning to prioritize, to have a deadline of say 9pm after which only real emergencies are attended to is important. Ask for help, let others have a go; even if they are not as proficient as you, by helping they will gradually improve and start to feel more involved.

- Do you try to balance your mental and physical efforts? Better quality sleep occurs when we feel both mentally and physically tired. Some people have jobs which require them to work hard mentally but they get little physical exercise. Other people have hard manual activity to occupy them, but they do little mental work. Find ways to address these inequalities when you're away from the work environment by going for a swim, a bike ride, doing a crossword puzzle, reading a book.

- Do you get enough exercise? Enjoying the fresh air, taking a walk on the beach or in the countryside, enjoying an outdoor game of tennis or football are all pleasurable ways of exercising whilst enjoying other people's company.

Exercise doesn't have to be pounding a treadmill at a gym, though some people enjoy that as a way of starting the day or of drawing a line after work before their evening starts. Exercise can be enjoyed with friends or family as a group activity by going for a walk or playing a game. The combination of fresh air, exercise and fun supports better quality sleep.

- Is your bedroom a comfortable place? De-clutter and make your bedroom a haven of peace and calm, a place where you go to relax, switch off and ultimately sleep. Minimise or screen off gadgetry, an office space, electrical and wireless equipment. Keep your bedroom as the one place where you go to be quiet, undisturbed, to read a book, have some 'me' time.

- Do you prepare for bed? Shower or take a relaxing bath and wash away the cares of the day. Put a few drops of lavender on the pillow. Enjoy fresh bed linen and keep your bedroom well ventilated. Avoid overstimulation from scary films, difficult conversations or late night computer games. Try to wind down an hour or two before bed.

Being tired all the time provides information that areas of your life are out of balance. Regarding sleep as an important part of your commitment to overall health and wellbeing is important. Some people delay going to bed until the last possible minute, feeling compelled to cram more and more tasks into each day. They then wonder why they feel drained the next day.

Treating sleep as important, as something that we prepare for as the day draws to a close is an important way of committing to better quality sleep. When we do this we will find that we wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the coming day.
